Usually, I am the kind of person to put ideas into action, like: really fast. So it doesn’t happen often that a project is shelved for years, but with this one, it’s exactly what happened. You see, I have wanted to photograph my parents and their love for years now, but I kept postponing. I was afraid it might be awkward. Or that I wouldn’t be pleased with the results somehow.
My relationship with my parents is really good, and they still are very much in love (even after 35 years together!). So I don’t know exactly why it was out of my comfort zone, but anyway: I finally did it. I finally realized this was too important to wait.
It took a little convincing, but they quickly were on board as well, and I got to photograph them in a place where we as a family feel very much at home: my parent’s beach house in IJmuiden, the Netherlands. My brother joined as well, and my fiancé Erik took some video ánd even took some photographs while I jumped in front of the camera for a few quick family shots. Below, you find the results. Oh and for other creatives out their with the same desire and limiting thoughts: the shoot wasn’t awkward at all, and I feel like this shoot actually brought us all even closer together. I very grateful for the experience.
PS: scroll through the story, and then some, to find a little behind the scenes video + my gear list for this shoot. Enjoy!
